I honestly used to be the girl who tried to put a “fitness program” together on my own. I’d look up YouTube videos and put them together with a few of my own exercises to come up with what I thought was something that would help me get results. The problem? Well, I’ve never had any formal training in exercise physiology, and I really don’t know what it takes to create a program. So what I’d put together would help me get moving but not necessarily help me get major results.
A question I get asked ALL the time by challengers and other people I talk to is, “Should I take a rest day?” I used to ask the same question too, so I thought I’d share a little insight on the matter.

I always feel like summer is the perfect time to get on track with my health. It’s warm, it’s sunny, it’s nice enough to be outside…But, then I remember that summer is also the time for vacations, weddings, barbecues, and realize how TOUGH it is to stay on track during the summer. Before I really got started with my healthy lifestyle, I’d work really hard to “prepare” for an event and eat really healthy leading up to vacation and then just completely let my guard down while on vacation. The worst part was, though, that this made it even HARDER to get back on track when I got home. This year I’m trying something new!
We’ll be headed to the beach in just a couple of weeks, and while I am committed to really staying on point with my fitness and nutrition over the next few weeks so I can feel strong and confident when we hit the sand, I plan on sticking pretty close to my plan while on vacation as well. Finding the motivation to stay active can be tough at any time of year, but it is particularly difficult in the winter months. It’s bleak outside, it’s cold everywhere, and all you really want to do is curl up on the couch in your slouchiest sweats with a good book and some hot cocoa. Oh wait, I was speaking for myself on that last one, but really, who doesn’t second-guess their commitment to a healthy style in the months between December and March? I know I do, but I am also committed to living a healthy lifestyle to live better, set an example for my daughter, and take care of myself. So, how do I do it in the winter months?
