One of the places that we spend the majority of our money is at the grocery store. I mean, a girl’s gotta eat, right? Right, but if you’re wondering how to save money at the grocery store, you may want to consider a few simple tips. While I’ll admit we could probably save a bit more here and there, the grocery strategies I use save us a good bit of money whether we’re shopping for a party or just for a regular staples. So quit wondering how to save money at the grocery store and start putting a little bit back in your pocket each week.
My Favorite Ways to Save Money on Groceries
I’ll make the disclaimer upfront that we like to eat, and I particularly enjoy messing in the kitchen. Barnabas joins me on a regular basis, especially on Saturday mornings, so our saving money on groceries doesn’t come from a lack of trying different things. Suffice that to say, you can save money on groceries and still try new recipes. You just have to be strategic. Here are a few of my favorite ways to save money at the grocery store.
1. Plan the Menu
I’m sure this goes back to my list making tendencies, but I cannot go to the store until I’ve planned our menu. This step alone helps me avoid making impulse purchases, so I end up spending less. This strategy also helps me double up on some items, so we can actually buy in bulk in save. So always take a few minutes to do a bit of planning before running to the store.
2. Make a List
This tip goes hand-in-hand with the previous. Once I’ve made my menu, then I start my list. By doing things in this order, I am able to see what we have already and avoid purchasing things we don’t really need. It also helps me know exactly what it is that we need so I don’t add things to the list or cart that are non-necessities.
3. Double Up on Meats and Other Ingredients
One of the easiest ways that I keep our grocery spending at a minimum is by doubling up on items. I do this most often with meats, but every once in a while I’ll do it with other things too, like vegetables, pasta, rice, etc. What I mean is that I’ll purchase the bulk package of chicken, beef, etc. Then I either split the meat between two to three different meals in the same week, or I use what I need and freeze the rest. By doing this, I constantly rotate our proteins, so that I typically only have to make one meat purchase a week – a practice that alone saves us anywhere from $5 to $10 a week.
4. Try a Discount Store
I know that we all have our loyalties to different brand name items, but if you really want to save, consider shopping at a discount store. I love shopping at our local Aldi (and am particularly thankful that it’s less than 8 minutes from our house and the closes grocery store to us). I started shopping at Aldi a year or so into our marriage and was pretty skeptical at first. While there are still a handful of items that I don’t or can’t purchase at Aldi, for the most part if I can’t find it there, then we must not need it. And I’m telling you, this is the number one way we save every week just because the prices are so much better at Aldi.
5. Compare Prices
If you can’t bring yourself to shop at Aldi, or you don’t have one in your area, then the least you can do is do some comparison shopping. Take a few hours one day to shop around for prices on your staple items. Take a notebook with you and jot down the prices for each item. Then, when you go to shop, take our notebook with you so you can remember where you can get the best price on individual items.
Sure there are lots of other ways you can save money at the grocery store, but I’m not much into couponing or using other methods. When I head to the store, I’m always sure to use these tips, and I know that I’m getting the best deal on whatever I’m buying. If you’ve been wondering how to save money at the grocery store, give these ideas a try and let me know how they work for you. You can learn how to save money and try new things.
