I was chatting with my sister recently, and she shared how rare it is for her to go do something on her own, just for her. I agreed what a challenge it is, and the conversation made me think…I am so passionate about encouraging other women to take care of themselves, but yet I often forget this piece. As moms, as women wearing many hats, we need to make time not just for taking care of ourselves but also for just resting. So today I want to encourage you (and give you permission if you feel like you need it) to take a mom break!
I’ve mentioned before that I tend to feel a little down and out once the winter weather hits, but lately I’ve been doing a little research in an effort to decide if its a bit more than just the winter blues. I still don’t have a definitive answer one way or another, but I’m treating the malaise I tend to feel this time of year much like someone diagnosed with SAD would. Annual Ditch Day…Did you know that was really a thing (beyond your senior year of high school)? Yeah, me neither, but apparently it is. Only it applies to ditching your New Year’s resolutions rather than 8 hours of instruction time and happens mid-January every year (January 17th to be exact). I still kind of chuckle at the thought, but I get it too.
I mean, really…How many times have you set your sights on completely overhauling your life on the brink of January 1st only to have abandoned ship by a couple of days in? ✋🏼 No? Just me! Well, then for those of you who have your lives together, you can scroll on through. But I think the rest of us will admit it’s happened at least a time or two to us.
Each year I try to choose a word to frame my focus for the year. (I know that’s not a new concept for anyone, but still.) In years past, I have chosen words that were very action-oriented or success driven. But this year, my word is purpose.
Throughout the holiday season, I pursued the concept of intentionality and joy, so I’m carrying that into this new year and just feeling a complete shift. Whereas the last couple of years in my life have been about hustle and really survival, this year I’m settling in, finding my stride, and going for purpose – in motherhood, in marriage, in business, in life…
I had a conversation with several of the mamas in my local moms group a few days ago revolving around our likes and dislikes of the holiday season. And during that conversation the idea of tradition came up…
Now, I’ll be honest. I’ve worked pretty hard in an attempt to establish some fun (mostly) and meaningful traditions for our family during the Christmas season. But the more we discussed, the more I realized that much of what I viewed as tradition have actually become obligations…A need to do more, to be more, to have more this time of year.
