5 Ways to Save Money this Valentine’s Day

Everyone equates Valentine's Day with spending money to make a big impact. Save money this year but still celebrate with these frugal Valentine ideas. When most people think of celebrating Valentine’s Day, they think of an elaborate evening filled with romance and complete with a high price tag. While it is nice to treat yourself once in a while and to enjoy an expensive evening with the one you love, I’m here to let you in on a little secret. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on Valentine’s Day. Gasp! I know, right. But it’s true, you really can have just as nice of a Valentine’s celebration without spending a lot of money. Want to know how I do it? Okay! Here are the top 5 ways you can save money on Valentine’s Day.

Make Valentine’s Day Special and Still Save Money

I’ve mentioned before that paying a high price for something doesn’t equate a high value. In fact, sticking to a budget often ends up creating a more meaningful and valuable gift or experience because you have to invest additional time and effort into planning, preparing, and finding just what it is you are looking for. So, remember as you are planning for Valentine’s Day, you can make it special and still stick to your budget. Use these budget-friendly Valentine ideas to help you save money and still have an extra special day.

1. Eat In

I know, I know. Lot of people equate a “date” with going out to eat, but you can have just as special of an evening by staying in and enjoying one another’s company at home. Want an extra-special Valentine idea? Make your significant other’s favorite meal, and set the mood with candles. Who needs to go out when you can create your own ambiance at home and save money?

2. Just Do Dessert

If Valentine’s Day really isn’t a special day to you without getting to go out, consider just doing dessert. Last year, we enjoyed a delicious cheesecake date on Valentine’s Day, and it was so much fun! Look for a place that you’ll both enjoy, like the cheesecake diner we found, and enjoy a sweet treat together. You’ll spend much less on your night out if you’re only doing dessert.

3. Use a Coupon or Special

Retailers and restaurants play the money saving game, too. They know by offering people coupons to save a little extra this time of year, they’ll have more customers. So, take advantage of what different places are offering. Plan ahead and look through the newspaper for regular coupons, search Groupon, or even ask your favorite restaurant if they have any specials they’re featuring for the holiday. Using coupons and taking advantage of specials is a great way to save a little extra on your Valentine’s Day date.

4. Make It Fun

Another great way to have a budget-friendly date on Valentine’s Day is to stick to something fun! Grab a pizza and then go roller skating. Or, try something else like laser tag or bumper cars. The benefit of doing something fun (okay, and somewhat kiddish) is you’ll spend less than you would on a more adult date, and you’ll likely make even more memories. That’s a win-win!

5. Get Creative

One of my favorite ways to spend time with my husband is making something together. We’ve worked on a number of different pieces of furniture and other projects in our home. Get creative and make something together rather than going on a traditional Valentine’s date. Keep it frugal by using pieces that you already have in your home. (We have a whole pile of boards sitting in our basement waiting for a good project.)

However you spend your Valentine’s Day, just remember, it doesn’t have to cost a lot to be memorable. Use my tips and save money this Valentine’s Day, and you’ll likely have the best day you’ve ever had!
