Finding the motivation to stay active can be tough at any time of year, but it is particularly difficult in the winter months. It’s bleak outside, it’s cold everywhere, and all you really want to do is curl up on the couch in your slouchiest sweats with a good book and some hot cocoa. Oh wait, I was speaking for myself on that last one, but really, who doesn’t second-guess their commitment to a healthy style in the months between December and March? I know I do, but I am also committed to living a healthy lifestyle to live better, set an example for my daughter, and take care of myself. So, how do I do it in the winter months? It’s not easy, but a few things do help. So, check out these tips for staying active this winter, and let me know if you have any suggestions. I can use all the help I can get. 😉
1. Find a Workout Video You Love
Chances are you’re going to be doing more working out inside than out this time of year, so make sure you’re prepared. Having a set workout to do helps me stay motivated and work harder than I would otherwise, so workout videos are my go-to this time of year. You’ll stay more motivated too if you’re doing something that you actually enjoy, so try a few different things until you find one that you really love.
2. Mix It Up
Okay, so I know I just told you to find a video that you love, but maybe I should have said several. Haha. Either way, another way I stay on track with my fitness goals in the winter is mixing it up with different workout options. I’m currently still doing the 21 Day Fix (and loving it), so I have a different workout for every day. The variety keeps my body guessing and helps me avoid burning out on the same workout all the time. You could try a system like I’m doing, or just find a few different activities you like doing to give yourself variety, such as incorporating an indoor walk/jog, a workout video, and a gym class into your rotation of workouts.
3. Set Goals
Having a goal to work toward is another way to keep up your momentum. You know there is the saying, “Summer bodies are made in the winter.” While that’s not my primary motivation, it is a good reminder that what we’re working for doesn’t just happen. Take some time to write out a few goals for yourself and then post them somewhere that you’ll see often. I like to post our goals on the bathroom mirror so we see them multiple times a day every day.
4. Find a Buddy to Help You Stay Active
You’ll hear me repeat this one over and over again, but it’s a good one. Having some accountability is one of the best ways to stay on track with your health and fitness, so find someone who has the same goals as you and work together. You don’t necessarily have to work out together (but you could). Just touch base with each other every day to encourage one another to get a workout in and keep pushing. Accountability is more important than ever in the winter.
5. Embrace the Cold
This isn’t necessarily my favorite option. (I absolutely hate the cold.) But, another great way to get active is to embrace the cold and enjoy some time out in the weather. Shoveling snow, having a snowball fight, or even building a snowman is a great way to have some fun and burn some calories. So, if you are up for it, don your winter gear and head out in the cold to get your workout in.
