Getting started is often the hardest part of any major change, especially when it comes to your health. If you’ve done any amount of research into making changes to your nutrition or getting started with a workout program, you probably feel inundated with information and even a little overwhelmed with the number of conflicting opinions. Don’t get stuck before you even get started! Simplify the process and kickstart your journey to a healthier you with these 5 simple steps!
Most people overcomplicate getting started with a healthy lifestyle. When it comes down to it, getting started is about finding your motivation and creating a plan to help you accomplish your goal of a healthier you! So whether you have a significant amount of weight to lose, just want to tone up, or need to improve your diet to prevent disease that runs in your family, you can! All you need to do is find your why, set effective goals, choose a place to start, make the commitment, plan for obstacles, get some accountability, and establish a short-term reward.
So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started on this journey together!
1. Find Your Why
If you have a goal to accomplish, you need the motivation to go with it – and that goes for any type of goal. Before you even think about getting started on this new path to a healthier life, you need to dig deep and figure out exactly why it is that you want to do this. Defining that “why,” your primary motivation to making these changes in your life will give you something to hold on to when it gets tough and you feel like giving. And trust me, it will get tough.
To start finding your why, begin by asking yourself a few questions:
- How will it benefit me to improve my health?
- How will I feel if I lose the weight, improve my nutrition, am more active…?
- What impact will these healthy changes have on the other areas of my life?
2. Set Effective Goals
Now that you’ve found your motivation for making this lifestyle change, it’s time to look at exactly what it is that you want to accomplish. It’s been said that “if you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time.” That may be a bit of a blunt way of putting it, but it’s true. If you don’t have a goal that you are striving toward, you aren’t going to keep pushing. So, our next step is to set effective goals.
The best goals are structured in such a way that they challenge you to step outside of your comfort zone and encourage you to constantly be improving. Your goals also need to measurable and action-oriented so that you can really take ownership of them and be proud of what you are accomplishing even if you haven’t met your weight loss goal yet. I also suggest establishing a major long-term goal that is buffeted by several smaller, short-term goals.
So, this is how it works:
- Establish your long-term goal and timeframe – keep it measurable, action-oriented, and achievable.
- Dissect your long-term goal and decide what you need to do to achieve it in your established timeframe.
- Create several short-term goals that you can use to monitor your progress and keep you on target to reach your goal.
By creating goals that are measureable and action-oriented, you know exactly what it is you need to do to achieve them. And, by having several short-term goals, you’ll not get discouraged because you haven’t yet met your larger, long-term goal at the end of Month 1. You’ll be able to see and recognize your progress for what it is!
3. Choose a Place to Start
It’s easy to want to jump in to a lifestyle change with both feet and some people are extremely effective that way. However, the vast majority of us need a little more guidance than that. Especially if you’re just getting started, it’s best to make simple changes first and move on from there.
For some people this will require choosing one area to change first. You might decide to focus solely on nutrition, or maybe you want to get started with exercise first. As you commit to this change and begin to make it fit comfortably within your life, then you’ll be able to move forward and adopt additional healthy habits.
4. Make the Commitment
The next step of starting this journey is really committing yourself. You have your reason for making healthy changes, you have your goals in place, you know where you are going to start, and now you just need to make it REAL!
To make the commitment, write it out for yourself. Be specific about the change that you’re making and why it matters to you. Put a date on it, and again, display it somewhere prominent.
5. Plan for Obstacles
Okay, so in a perfect world, you’d always get your workout in first thing and have time to perfectly prepare your meals each day. But, life isn’t perfect, so you are going to run in to some obstacles. However, if you’ve looked ahead, anticipated those obstacles, and created a plan, you’ll not be thrown as far off your game, and you’ll be able to recover much more easily.
Lots of people get stuck even before they get started. Don’t let that be you! Use these 5 simple tips to kickstart your health journey and start on your way to a healthier you today! Quit saying you’ll start tomorrow or next week or next month! Start today, and next month you’ll be wondering why you didn’t get started sooner!
